Advocating For Mental health

Peter McGeorge was a highly respected psychiatrist, mental health leader, and advocate for integrated, person-centred care across Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. His career was marked by a deep commitment to improving the lives of children, adolescents, adults, and families through thoughtful clinical practice, service development, policy leadership, and research.

As an adolescent and general psychiatrist, Peter devoted much of his professional life to the development, delivery, and review of mental health services. He worked extensively in both clinical and leadership roles, including as Director of the Inner-City Health Programme at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, where he held overall responsibility for Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug, and Homeless Health Services. He also served there as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Emergency Psychiatry, bringing expertise and compassion to some of the most vulnerable patients in the health system.

Peter’s influence extended well beyond hospital settings. In New Zealand, he chaired the Mental Health Commission from 2008 to 2010 and played an important role in shaping national mental health thinking and reform. He also dedicated much of his career to youth and family services, leading an Adolescent Psychiatric Service in Auckland and helping establish a Young Adults Service at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. His work reflected a longstanding belief in early intervention, continuity of care, and support across the life span.

He was deeply involved in community and advocacy work, serving as Chair and Patron of the New Zealand Mental Health Foundation, a board member of the Framework Trust, and a founder, member, and Chair of Youth Horizons Trust. In Australia, he contributed his experience and leadership to the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, now Flourish, and the Wayside Chapel. From 2014 to 2018, he served as Clinical Lead for NSW Health’s Pathways to Community Living Initiative, helping advance deinstitutionalisation and recovery-oriented care.

Internationally, Peter was a board member and Oceania Regional Vice-President of the World Federation for Mental Health, a board member of the International Mental Health Collaborating Network, and a Senior Associate of the International Foundation for Integrated Care. He was widely recognised for his work on integrated mental health systems, service quality, and the implementation of comprehensive care models at regional, national, and international levels. At the time of this biography, he was also undertaking a PhD under the supervision of Professor Luis Salvador-Carulla at the University of Canberra.

Peter’s published work reflected the breadth of his professional interests, including emergency psychiatry, community mental health care, policy development, and older persons’ mental health. His contributions to the field helped shape not only services and systems, but also the thinking that underpinned them.

He will be remembered as a thoughtful clinician, committed reformer, and generous collaborator whose work left a lasting legacy in mental health care. His life was devoted to building better systems of support for those in need, and to ensuring that care was both humane and effective.
