Peter McGeorge

Associate Professor Peter McGeorge

Peter McGeorge is an Adolescent and General Psychiatrist who has extensive experience in the development, delivery, and review of mental health services. He is currently focusing this work on a PhD under the supervision of Professor Luis Salvador- Carulla at the University of Canberra.

Professor McGeorge was the Director of the Inner-City Health Programme at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney with having overall responsibility for Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug and Homeless Health Services, as well as. At St Vincents Hospital he was also a Consultant Psychiatrist in Emergency Psychiatry.

In New Zealand Professor McGeorge was the Chair of the New Zealand Mental Health Commission from 2008 to 2010, and is a member of the Child and Adolescent Faculty within the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). He has specialised in the development and delivery of services for youth and their families as the head of an Adolescent Psychiatric Service in Auckland NZ and the establishment of a Young Adults Service at St Vincent’s Private Hospital. 

He was affiliated with several NGOs in New Zealand as Chair and Patron of the NZ Mental Health Foundation, a board member of the Framework Trust and as a founder/member and Chair of the Youth Horizons Trust. 

In Australia he has been a Board member of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (now Flourish) and the Wayside Chapel. He was Clinical Lead for NSW Health “Pathways to Community Living Initiative” (PCLI) between 2014-2018. 

Internationally he has been a board member and Oceania Regional Vice-President of the World Federation for Mental Health, a board member of the International Mental Health Collaborating Network and a Senior Associate of the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC). Currently he is the Medical Director for the Mid-Central District Health Board in New Zealand.  

He has been involved in deinstitutionalisation projects, national policy development, reviews of Mental Health Services and the implementation of comprehensive systems of integrated, person-centred mental health care.  His research interests include the description, functioning and evaluation of systems of integrated, systems of quality mental healthcare at regional, national and international levels. He is currently focusing this work on a PhD under the supervision of Professor Luis Salvador- Carulla at the University of Canberra.
